You know those little apartment tasks you keep saying you’ll get to eventually? The junk drawer that barely closes. The mystery items in the back of the fridge. The clothes you haven’t worn in a year but somehow keep moving from one side of the closet to the other.
September is a good time to finally tackle them.
You don’t need a complete home makeover or an entire week off. Set aside a weekend, put on some music, and work your way through this apartment reset.
1. Clean Out the Fridge
Start with the obvious: expired condiments, forgotten leftovers, and anything you genuinely cannot identify.
Once everything is out, wipe down the shelves and drawers before putting things back. Take a quick inventory while you’re at it. You might discover you own four bottles of the same salad dressing.
2. Deal With the Junk Drawer
Every apartment has one. Maybe yours is technically a basket, cabinet, or suspiciously full kitchen drawer.
Empty the whole thing and sort it before putting anything back. Toss actual trash, relocate things that belong elsewhere, and keep only the items that make sense there.
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is being able to find the tape when you need the tape.
3. Go Through Your Closet
September is a natural time to take another look at your wardrobe.
Pull out anything that doesn’t fit, you no longer like, or you simply never wear. Create separate piles for items to keep, donate, or discard.
And yes, the shirt you haven’t worn since 2022 probably knows what pile it belongs in.
4. Wash the Things You Forget to Wash
Sheets and towels are obvious. What about your shower curtain, bath mat, throw blankets, pillow covers, or washable rugs?
Check care instructions first, then give those frequently used but easily forgotten items some attention.
5. Clean Under the Furniture
This is where things get interesting.
Move what you safely can and vacuum or sweep underneath your sofa, bed, tables, and other furniture. Besides dust, you may recover a few things you thought were gone forever.
Consider anything you find under the couch a bonus.
6. Give the Bathroom a Proper Reset
Instead of doing the usual quick clean, empty drawers and cabinets and go through what’s inside.
Get rid of empty containers and products you no longer use. Wipe down storage areas, organize what remains, and restock the everyday essentials you’re running low on.
Future you will appreciate this.
7. Tackle One Problem Area
Don’t try to reorganize your entire apartment at once. Pick the one spot that annoys you the most.
Maybe it’s the entryway where everything gets dropped. Maybe it’s a kitchen cabinet that attacks you every time you open it. Maybe it’s your desk.
Give yourself one small problem to solve.
8. Do a Digital Declutter
Your apartment isn’t the only thing that can use a reset.
Delete screenshots you don’t need, unsubscribe from emails you never read, organize important files, remove apps you don’t use, and finally clear some of those notifications.
No storage bins required.
9. Check Your Everyday Supplies
There’s nothing worse than discovering you’re out of something exactly when you need it.
Take five minutes to check your supply of trash bags, laundry detergent, cleaning products, paper goods, batteries, light bulbs, and other household basics.
Make one list and restock what you actually need.
10. Do Something That Makes Home Better
Finish the reset with something you’ll actually enjoy.
Rearrange a corner of the living room. Put up photos you’ve been meaning to display. Bring out a favorite blanket. Start a new book on the nightstand. Clear off the kitchen counter.
It doesn’t have to be productive in the traditional sense. It just needs to make your apartment feel a little better to come home to.
One Weekend, Done
An apartment reset doesn’t have to mean buying new organizers, completely redecorating, or spending two days cleaning nonstop.
Pick a few things from this list, take breaks, and get done what you can. Even checking off three or four tasks can make your space feel noticeably more organized.
